loved it

I spent the weekend in Longview, Tx at a workshop led by Tammy Cromer-Campbell. We hacked our Holgas, and it was just what I needed.

I fixed the link.

Thanks! i take it you shared some techniques. nothing beats note sharing w/ talented people!

I took away far more than I offered up.

It was good to see like-minded folks. :-)

Check this guy out.

Photon detector? lol!

My project is building photon counters for satellite laser communications.

We lend "meaning" to every individual photon transmitted. ;)
Jen said…
Cool!

Meaning? Such as?

That guy is very talented, in my opinion. I really like his work.
Jen said…
A certain kind of art, I guess "conceptual", is so beautiful to me. Precisely because it has no obvious meaning.
Thersites said…
Meaning, as in "data". Depending upon where the photon hits our supercooled detector, we can tell what "letters" of the alphabet the photon represents. We use pulse position modulation to "encode" the photons. And our photons thereby have a very precise meaning. ;)

Very interesting!

Is it strictly research?

Thersites said…
nope. one day it will likely form the backbone of a space based communications relay system. we just demo'd the system a few weeks ago from the moon. now we want to perform a 2 year "operational" trial on board a traditional GEO based comm satellite.

i do like his spacetime series of photo's... he captures some interesting phenomena.

...and yes, sometimes even a natural random pattern can carry unintended subjective meanings... i see them (faces/forms)in the shower every morning when i look at the marble wall tiles. ;)
Thersites said…
my mind invariably seeks to "connect the dots" and extract the marble's "hidden" meaning.

john Nash had nothing on me. ;)

I do it, too.

As a child, I was nearly obsessed with seeing faces in nature.

Just the other day my red scarf was a horrible face on my window sill.

Crazy, no?
;-)

Yes, from what I saw, the spacetime gallery looked amazing. He used film for those, I think.

And I watched the NASA video.
It must be rewarding to know that your work is a foundation for big scientific advances.

John Nash. That movie broke my heart. For him, but also because I was shocked that he had lost touch...
Thersites said…
I did too, once. It can happen easier than most people realize.
