I'm almost always sitting directly across from the mark and use a 60mm.
I don't really care about field depth so I can use a pretty wide aperture and a shutter speed quick enough to use when the train is bouncing around. I generally rest the camera on my knee.
I thought the banjo player looked a little like Tiny Tim. He was playing a 1920's Vega and we chatted a while.
