Glorious rainy day here.  Homemade Gorditos with lots of lime and pico plus Ryan Adams in my ears means I am well pleased.

February is a restless month. Too much busyness all around.  I'm all for productivity but can't we live while we're being good little workers?

I'm trying.

Actually I like it. It's kitschy.

Even better now! I had to enlarge the image to get rid of the distortion.

Reminds me of our friend over at Cambridge ... "yellow"! ;)
Thersites said…
???

Cambridge "blue" is the official colour. Are you think Coat of Arms?

Hinc lucem et pocula sacra!
nicrap said…
Nah, i just think that our friend is "yellow". [Just a vague impression which i should have thought twice before making public ... But no matter. Now that i have, i had better stand by it.] :)
nicrap said…
...i had better stand by it.

...i.e. face the consequences of my "slip". This will teach me not to be hasty in future.

"I am curious," yellow?

"Yellow belly," yellow?

"Sunny, optimistic," yellow?

Huxley/ "T.S. Eliot - Wasteland," yellow?

Speak up, man! ;)

The Bloomsbury Group were mostly Cambridge Trinity/Kings College grads...

Crome "yellow". ;)

lol. We need a path integral for your brain, too. It runs in so many ways. :)
Thersites said…
Okay,... that didn't work. You'll have to go here and peruse the linked paragraph yourself... :P
Thersites said…
Like Huxley and Eliot, I find the Bloomsbury Group of Cambridge rather distasteful. When Eliot wrote of "The Hollow Men"... the "Crome Yellow"... these were the individuals to which he was referring.
nicrap said…
Yes, i remeber reading about it somewhere ... but i can't recall where.

I am not exactly proud of it, fj.

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah they were all yellow,

I think you've caught your "writerly blues", nicrap... loosen up on the pen a bit! ;)

...a roman a clef will do... just don't forget to send me the key! ;)

Now explain yourself... cuz I'm going to get you in trouble with NG now... ;p

Fj you are a rascal!

Coldplay yellow us my favorite. ;-)

lol.

I will not lie. I have long suspected her of a certain intellectual "yellowness" — could it be laziness? i don't know. At any rate, regardless of its veracity or not, it was still a "slip." For one thing, whence have i taken it upon myself to point out other people's follies, where are my "tokens of royalty"? For another, and this is more important, i know how it feels to pursue an ideal, a dream, how afraid one feels, so that one careless word, one hasty remark can be enough to make you lose all your faith; but, even if it don't, it can still rankle, till long after it is said. It is for these reasons that i am ashamed, and why i also want the comment to stand, as a kind of reminder to me not to be hasty in future.

For in the multitude of middle-aged men who go about their vocations in a daily course determined for them much in the same way as the tie of their cravats, there is always a good number who once meant to shape their own deeds and alter the world a little. The story of their coming to be shapen after the average and fit to be packed by the gross, is hardly ever told even in their consciousness; for perhaps their ardor in generous unpaid toil cooled as imperceptibly as the ardor of other youthful loves, till one day their earlier self walked like a ghost in its old home and made the new furniture ghastly. Nothing in the world more subtle than the process of their gradual change! In the beginning they inhaled it unknowingly: you and I may have sent some of our breath towards infecting them, when we uttered our conforming falsities or drew our silly conclusions...

[Middlemarch.]

I desrve to be shamed, Jen. Don't worry. :)

A "silly conclusion," that's all it was.

nicrap, you're good to admit it.

Now, should we all confess to things we've thought that might not be true, or kind?

TAG! You're it, fj! ;-)

I will not lie.

You're no fun!

A Freudian slip, also called parapraxis, is an error in speech, memory, or physical action that is interpreted as occurring due to the interference of an unconscious ("dynamically repressed") subdued wish, conflict, or train of thought guided by the super-ego and the rules of correct behaviour. They reveal a "source outside the speech"

So what do you think that the "source outside the speech" behind the "blurt/ slip" was?

"I coulda been a contender!" ??

...and the commitment to "letting it stand"... a point de capiton?
Thersites said…
...and since we're into "confessions" of the "truth or dare" variety... I saw a lot of myself in nicrap's roman a clef, Middlemarch excursion

I think that all of us, at a certain age, go through it. But instead of lamenting my lack of greatness, I try to take a more objective look at myself...switch lenses. What I thought would be "greatness" as a child is no longer my aim. (for the better!)

I think that true greatness is found in everyday moments.

AND, other people may not notice it at all.

SO, I guess my definition would be an inner experience of consciousness, and an admission that I am NOT the source of goodness.

I think I'm rambling, but this, for me, is as "great" as it gets.
Jen said…
Maybe the illusion of changing the world is not a bad one, but as a young person it is misplaced. I'm glad that people are working to cure cancer, but my great contribution to the world comes in quieter ways.

It's still very much there.
And it counts.

:-)

You're no fun!

But you are!. heh. ;)

Btw, the pirate look, is it new?
Thersites said…
I think that the point is to realize the the subject FOR whom we seek greatness is not outside ourselves, there is no big Other... no faceless "blogger" who actually reads and follows what we may write... there is only our own struggling Ego-Ideal who occasionally degenerates into his cruel and omnipotent "SuperEgo" "outside-the-law" masked personae.
nicrap said…
I know you are thinking aloud, Jen. But i think Eliot is talking about something a little different than what you seem to be implying. :)

Actually, that's a remnant from "Talk-like-a-pirate" day, last Sept...

I forgot about it... but since I have recently developed a stye in that very eye... very timely and apt!
nicrap said…
Sorry to hear that, fj! :(

I know you are thinking aloud, Jen. But i think Eliot is talking about something a little different than what you seem to be implying.

Let's say her concern is different. :)

Time to hit the bed, guys. Nyt!

Jen said…
of course, fj.

The struggle begins and ends inside.

But then, why do we put it on the outside? WHy share things like this? (and even though I write in a more personal way, very direct, you also put your struggles on your blog)

I said just yesterday that I hate social media, because of this very thing. Why do I put these things out into the public when the people reading it are just like myself, struggling the same way.

Anyone who would guide me in finding my way would never read blogs (they'd have no need to) . :-)

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. If there is good to be gained, and that is the goal, then there is no harm...I suppose.

nicrap, tell me where I took a wrong turn. (with regards to Middlemarch.)
Jen said…
must go for now. See you all later!
Thersites said…
Nite, nicrap!

I think we "share" because that is what the SuperEgo/Ego-Ideal's function is... to "calculate" for us our "relative" social position in the herd/ hoard pecking order. And we can't determine that unless we seek feedback from the other cattle/ beasts and judge it from their responses to our quieries. It fashions our entire Symbolic realm between the Real and Imaginary whence our "ideologies" and "senses of self" originate.
