I've decided to do project 365.
It's an exercise to help me look around more. These images might be dull at times, but so is life.

Looks like a bishop [chess piece] to me ... what is it?

It's a Tibetan singing bowl, used for meditation. The wooden thing is used to "ring" the bowl. It makes a beautiful sound.

I suspect it was more a "prayer" bowl... with the prayer circumscribing the bowl, and being "sung" to the gods with each rotation... ;P

The inscription is written in concentric circles rather like a prayer inside a Tibetan prayer wheel. As the bowl is rotated, the prayer is released.
I love inter-passive objects!

Zizek says that the "fault" of Europeans is that they look for their "lost" sacred knowledge in "others" while the Tibetans look for it within themselves.

Too sweeping, won't you say? Such statements tell you very little but hide a lot — for instance, is there a monolithic european tradition?

I'd have to ask io. Or europa. ;)

Religion is sound.
That was coopted by a New Age movement but I believe it's long been germane to Tibetan Buddhism.
Ever listen to a Zen exorcism?

It's not interpassive, FJ. It's very active. Payer is about changing the heart of the pray-er, not asking og God.

How "active" a form of praying is a Tibetan
prayer wheel
?
How about
prayer flags
?

Of course, I find the consequences of the way
atheists
pray even more interesting...

Unfortunately out of print
It's quite an ear opener if you ever see it at a used store for a reasonable price.
There are quite a few under "Tibet" but I am not familiar with them.
