Callum Innes, Exposed Painting Mars Black, 2002

I love visiting the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
The painting below is my favorite in the permanent collection.

This is my favorite detail. I can't even explain why I love this painting so much.
I like to get really, really close to the canvas. When I was there in December, the docent got nervous. But how can you truly enjoy it from a distance?

The advantage of seeing art, and not internet representations of it, I suppose.

Not my cup of tea, but then neither was Mark Rothko.

I totally understand! It's not the kind of thing that usually grabs me, but for some reason, this one does. While more classical styles seem to have more universal themes, sometimes modern art feels utterly personal.

There were two other abstract modern minimalists (is that an actual category?) featured in December, and none of their work resonated with me.

Funny how that works, or doesn't in some cases. Sometimes with me, I have to be "in the moment". And when I come back in a different one, and it doesn't work... I have to set it aside and wait for another one. Your present state of mind makes all the difference.

Rothko seems to be an influence for the painterly edges you enjoy.

One problem with photos is that they can't really convey the impact of an 8' by 8' painting.

Yes, and it really does have an overwhelming presence.

Jenn, don't underestimate the lack of color in why you like it so much...the lovely texture that creates. The brush strokes seem so delicate and I like this a lot, too.
I'm also a Rothko fan.
