The masculinity of the woman and the femininity of the man are inferior, and it is regrettable that the full value of their personalities should be contaminated by something that is less valuable. On the other hand, the Shadow belongs to the wholeness of the personality: the strong man must somewhere be weak, somewhere the clever man must be stupid, otherwise he is too good to be true and falls back on pose and bluff. Is it not an old truth that woman loves the weaknesses of the strong man more than his strength, and the stupidity of the clever man more than his cleverness? Logically the opposite of love is hate, and of Eros, Phobos, (fear); but psychologically it is the will to power. Where love reigns, there is no will to power; and where the will to power is paramount, love is lacking. The one is but the shadow of the other. Myself, I'd say the opposite of love is indifference.

I agree, being indifferent is total detachment, vs the bond of love or hate.

love grows from indifference, but then hate grows from love. each is its' precurser.

Okay. I read it all and understood everything but the first half of the last Zizek link.

Anyway, it seems like we are mixing meanings. Love vs affinity maybe?

I am not sure one can really LOVE all of humanity

Is that like a weaker magnet?

i think the distinction just discussed addresses the shifting perspective of the one, to the "other" one, many, and to the "all" and back... as the all differences/distinctions found in the "one" are assessed, evaluated, and found either "wanting" or "overflowing"

or same vs other... i really should go through Plato's list of incomensurable dialectical absolutes from "Parmenides".

from Wikipedia... Thus one and the same thing can be both like and unlike, or one and many, by participating in the Forms of Likeness and Unlikeness, of Unity and Plurality; I am one man, and as such partake of the Form of Unity, but I also have many parts and in this respect I partake of the Form of Plurality. There is no problem in demonstrating that sensible things may have opposite attributes; what would cause consternation, and earn the admiration of Socrates, would be if someone were to show that the Forms themselves were capable of admitting contrary predicates.

Weaker magnet, yes. But love is more intimate and vulnerable. I can't be intimate with all of humanity (despite what celebrities on Facebook think)
Jen said…

But see, whenever love is discussed, you have agape, fileo, and Eros.

I think that Eros is the opposite of indifference.

And phileo is born out of indifference
Thersites said…
As we divide the whole, the parts take on different attributes.
Jen said…
So why do you sing the praises of indifference? ;-)
Thersites said…
it is the field in which love can grow.
Thersites said…
...cuz love can not take root in a field of universal hate.

ROMEO

[To a Servingman] What lady is that, which doth
enrich the hand
Of yonder knight?
Servant

I know not, sir.
ROMEO

O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!
It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear;
Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!
So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows,
As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows.
The measure done, I'll watch her place of stand,
And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand.
Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight!
For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.

NURSE
His name is Romeo, and a Montague;
The only son of your great enemy.

JULIET
My only love sprung from my only hate!
Too early seen unknown, and known too late!
Prodigious birth of love it is to me,
That I must love a loathed enemy.

Juliet....it's no wonder she did herself in!

ahhh... but was it mere allegory for the death which lover's love?

but now we're speaking of things which transpire at love's end... and transformation, once more, into "indifference". ;)
Jen said…
Oh, I much prefer the allegory over the literal translation!!

Transformation into peace and calm. ;)
